Red deer exhibit spatial and temporal responses to hiking activity

چکیده
Outdoor recreation has the potential to impact spatial and temporal distribution of animals. We explore interactions between red deer Cervus elaphus hikers along a popular hiking path in Scottish Highlands. placed camera traps transects at different distances (25, 75 150 m) from study whether distance hiker activity influences number detected. compared this with detection an additional, spatially isolated area (one km away any other path). collected count data on start explored hourly (red during daytime), daily, diurnal (day versus night) monthly distributions deer. Using generalized linear mixed models forward model selection, we found that changed activity. fewer were detected busy periods. daytime, more m than 25 m. Moreover, day, greater rate around close likely be night. This suggests avoidance by deer, area, takes place over are displaced into less disturbed areas when is busy. Our results suggest short-term, as return

Constraints on plastic responses to climate variation in red deer.
Influences of climate on life history traits in natural populations are well documented. However, the implications of between-individual variation in phenotypic plasticity underlying observed trait-environment relationships are rarely considered due to the large, long-term datasets required for such analysis. Studies typically present correlations of annual trait means with climate or assume th...
متن کاملTemporal scales, trade-offs, and functional responses in red deer habitat selection.
Animals selecting habitats often have to consider many factors, e.g., food and cover for safety. However, each habitat type often lacks an adequate mixture of these factors. Analyses of habitat selection using resource selection functions (RSFs) for animal radiotelemetry data typically ignore trade-offs, and the fact that these may change during an animal's daily foraging and resting rhythm on ...
متن کاملStudyCapture myopathy in red deer and wild goat
This syndrome is a shock-like hyper metabolic myopathy triggered in susceptible animals by stress. Capture myopathy (C.M.) is a commonly occurring condition in mammals following trapping and transportation. In this case 12 to 24 hours after transportation of red deer (Cevus elaphus) and wild goats (Capra ibex) clinical signs such as: muscular tremor, ataxia, recumbency, hyperthermia, tachyca...
متن کاملSpatial and temporal distribution of larvae of coral reef fishes in northern Red Sea, Egypt
The larval community of coral reef fishes in the Red Sea was studied in coastal and offshore sites to determine the effects of the exposure to waves and currents and the distance from the shore in structuring the larval fish community. Plankton sampling from inshore and offshore sites and the exposed and sheltered sides of the reefs resulted in the collection of 2048 larvae representing 49 diff...
متن کاملSpatial and Temporal Trends of Deer Harvest and Deer-Vehicle Accidents in Ohio
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus} have been increasing dramatically in the eastern United States, with concomitant increases in impacts resulting from deer browsing and deer-vehicle collisions. In Ohio, the number of deer were estimated at near zero in 1940 to over 450,000 in 1995. We analyzed estimates of deer harvest and deer-vehicle collisions in 1995 for 88 counties in Ohio. These ...
